If you are financing, the first step is to get a pre-approval letter. You can get this from your bank.
Why do you need a pre-approval letter?
A pre-approval letter will tell you how much a bank is willing to lend you for a mortgage. Many buyers think their budget is $xxx,xxx but a lender will ultimately tell you what kind of price range you should be looking at. A pre-approval letter is an offer (but not a commitment) to lend you a specific amount which is good for about 30-90 days (date ranges may vary depending on the bank).
What does a lender look at for a pre-approval?
Lenders will look at things such as:
- Income
- Assets
- Credit Score
- Debts
- Employment Verification
